Blue Diamonds for a Ring That Feels Like You

Blue Diamonds for a Ring That Feels Like You

A blue diamond gives us an interesting place to begin a design. Its colour can be the first thing you notice, even in a simple setting. Add the shape of the stone, the warmth or coolness of the metal, and a few carefully considered details, and the ring starts to take on its own character.

If you love the idea of a blue diamond, here are a few things worth knowing before choosing one.

Where the blue colour comes from

Diamonds with a naturally occurring blue colour are exceptionally rare. In most, trace amounts of boron within the crystal structure are responsible for the colour. Natural blue diamonds range from a subtle hint of blue to rich, vivid shades, with strongly saturated colours often commanding extraordinary prices.

Blue colour can also be created through treatment. Both natural and lab-grown diamonds can have treated colour, so how a diamond was formed and how it acquired its colour are two separate things to understand.

What is a lab-grown blue diamond?

A lab-grown blue diamond is a real diamond. As GIA explains, laboratory-grown diamonds have essentially the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as natural diamonds.

Their blue colour may develop during growth or be produced through treatment afterwards. Lab-grown blue diamonds generally cost considerably less than comparable diamonds with naturally occurring blue colour. This makes it easier to explore different shades, sizes, and designs within your budget.

If you would like to learn more about how diamonds are grown, I explored the process in our article about diamond seeds.

Finding the blue you love

Some people are drawn to a softer blue; others want a rich, vivid colour that immediately catches the eye. I would begin by looking at a few stones and noticing which shade you keep coming back to.

A photograph is a useful starting point, but I also like to see a diamond moving in a video. How does the blue look as the stone turns? Does the centre sparkle as it moves? Do you like its proportions as much as its colour?

Lighting and screens can affect how colour appears, but in my experience, diamonds look even more beautiful in person than they do on screen.

A 2 ct radiant blue diamond in a signet design

One of our designs features a 2 ct radiant-cut blue lab-grown diamond. A radiant cut combines a square or rectangular outline, trimmed corners, and brilliant-style faceting, giving it both defined lines and sparkle.

In our signet design, the rectangular diamond sits horizontally across the finger. A wide, bevelled bezel frames the stone, while broad shoulders taper into the band.

I like how this arrangement gives the blue diamond room to stand on its own. The metal becomes part of the design, with its polished surfaces and clean edges framing the colour.

Choosing the metal and setting

The same blue diamond can inspire several different rings. I might pair it with platinum or white gold for a cool, understated palette, or yellow gold for a warmer contrast.

The setting changes the mood, too. A bezel creates a continuous metal border around the diamond. Prongs give a more open appearance, while small white diamonds can introduce a brighter contrast around the centre stone.

Making the design personal

Perhaps blue reminds you of a place you love, connects with a memory, or echoes the colour of your eyes. That is enough of a starting point.

Whether you are thinking about an engagement ring, a signet, or a piece to mark a personal milestone, we can explore the stone and design together.

If you have an idea in mind, send us a message. We would be happy to help you create a blue diamond ring that feels like you.
