Marquise or Oval

Marquise or Oval

Choosing a diamond for your engagement ring

You might love the pointed outline of a marquise, then find yourself drawn to the softer curves of an oval. Both can be beautiful starting points for an engagement ring. Seeing them on your own hand can help you discover which shape feels right for you.

The difference in their outlines

A marquise diamond has curved sides that meet at two pointed ends. Its outline gives a ring a strong sense of direction, whether the diamond sits along the finger or across it. An oval has rounded ends and a continuous curved outline, which gives it a softer appearance.

The setting gives either shape its own character. A marquise can look delicate in a simple solitaire or expressive in an organic design. An oval can feel understated with a plain band, or more detailed with side stones and milgrain. You can explore both shapes in contemporary and vintage-inspired designs.

See both shapes on your hand

During your consultation, we can place a marquise and an oval on your hand so you can compare them side by side. Gently turn your hand to see how each diamond catches the light, notice how the shapes look on you, and take a moment to see which one you feel drawn to.

We will help you notice how the light moves across each diamond. You can take your time looking at the diamonds and see which one you keep coming back to.

Think about comfort and the setting

For either shape, we consider how high the diamond sits, how the band feels and how a future wedding band will fit alongside it. A low setting can be appealing, but the diamond's depth and the construction of the ring affect what is possible.

See how each diamond fits your design

Choosing between marquise and oval is also an opportunity to consider the proportions of the whole ring. To help you visualise your ring, we can create 3D previews showing your ring with each diamond shape, so you can compare the two versions and think through what you like about each one. Once you’ve chosen a stone, we can finalise the remaining design details before moving into production.
